Calvin

Exodus 20:13 (NET, 2nd Ed.)

13 "You shall not murder."

Genesis 4:3-10 (NET, 2nd Ed.)

3 At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the LORD. 4 But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock—even the fattest of them. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering, 5 but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast. 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? 7 Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it.” 8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he replied, “I don’t know! Am I my brother’s guardian?” 10 But the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!

Spurgeon

2nd Kings 7:19 (NET, 2nd Ed.)

19 But the officer had replied to the prophet, “Look, even if the LORD made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?” Elisha said, “Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!”

John 20:24-29 (NET, 2nd Ed.)

24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the wounds from the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the wounds from the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it!” 26 Eight days later the disciples were again together in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and examine my hands. Extend your hand and put it into my side. Do not continue in your unbelief, but believe.” 28 Thomas replied to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Notes

With Calvin, we see the commandment "You shall not murder." In Matthew 5, Jesus expands on this commandment by saying "everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement." With each of the physical commandments (adultery, stealing, etc.) Jesus places an additional qualifier on it, do not do this in your heart.

With Spurgeon, we are called to believe. "Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed." Similar to a few days ago, we are called to lean on God and not test him. To have faith and not doubt that what God says, is.
