Reflections

Today's sermon was on Acts 21, and Paul's journey to Jerusalem. Despite being counseled against going by his friends and colleagues, he pressed on. He was confident in what God was calling him to.

Here's my notes from the sermon:

The Bible is a compass (or lamp) not a GPS.

Paul knew he must go to Jerusalem.

How can we walk in confidence?

  1. Knowing it will be hard doesn't mean God isn't calling you to do it.

    • If God calls you to it, He will lead you through it.
  2. Others can confirm but only God can direct.

    • Proverbs 11:14, 12:15, 15:22, 19:20, 20:18

    • If people are counseling against what you are convicted God is leading you to, proceed with caution and humility.

  3. We must desire God's will over our own.

How can we be sure of what God is calling us to?

  1. Know what the word of God says.

  2. Have a pure and surrendered heart.

    • Matthew 5:8

    • Ephesians 6:14 (Righteousness is what guards the heart.)

    • Hebrews 5:14

    • Psalm 25:14

  3. Hear the voice of God.

    • Psalm 78:1

    • John 1:27

  4. Receive peace from God.

    • Colossians 3:15-17

    • Philippians 4:6-7

Closing

I don't have much to add other than to echo two specific points:

  1. The word of God is the primary way we are given to hear His voice.

  2. The will of God in your life will never be contrary to His precepts in Scripture.

Don't neglect the daily study of the word, spending time in the word and with God. Give the Holy Spirit time to work on you and you won't be disappointed.
